آں عزمِ بلند آور آں سوزِ جگر آور

Aan azm-e buland aawar, aan soz-e jigar aawar

شمشیرِ پدر خواہی بازوے پدر آور

Shamshir-e pidar khwahi, bazu-e pidar aawar

Bring that high resolve, bring that burning passion of the heart.
If you desire your father's sword, bring your father's arm.

Context

This couplet, often attributed to Allama Iqbal, encapsulates a profound philosophical message central to his work. It encourages not merely inheriting a material legacy but embodying the spirit and strength that forged it. The 'high resolve' and 'burning passion' are presented as essential virtues. The demand to 'bring your father's arm' if one desires 'your father's sword' transcends physical inheritance, urging the recipient to cultivate the same inner strength, character, and determination as their predecessor to truly be worthy of and effectively wield their legacy. It speaks to the importance of self-cultivation and spiritual growth over superficial possession.
