POEM · PERMANENT EDITION
Muhammad Iqbal مُلّائے حَرم Ajab nahin ke Khuda tak teri rasai ho ●sher 1 of 2

عجَب نہیں کہ خدا تک تری رسائی ہو

Ajab nahin ke Khuda tak teri rasai ho

تری نگہ سے ہے پوشیدہ آدمی کا مقام

Teri nigah se hai posheeda aadmi ka maqam

It is not strange that you might reach God,
But from your sight, man's true station remains hidden.

تری نماز میں باقی جلال ہے، نہ جمال

Teri namaz mein baaqi jalal hai, na jamal

تری اذاں میں نہیں ہے مری سحر کا پیام

Teri azan mein nahin hai meri sahar ka payam

In your prayer, neither glory nor grace now resides,
And in your call to prayer, my dawn's message is absent.

Context

This Urdu poem offers a poignant critique of superficial religiosity, lamenting the perceived loss of spiritual depth and transformative power in contemporary religious practices. It suggests that while individuals may seek divine connection, they have become detached from the true essence of humanity's potential and the profound meaning inherent in prayer and the call to prayer. The speaker contrasts this with a "dawn" of spiritual awakening, implying a call for introspection and a return to a more authentic, vibrant faith, a theme prevalent in reformist and philosophical Urdu poetry.
