Muhammad Iqbal رقص Chhod Europe ke liye raqs-e-badan ke kham-o-pech ●sher 1 of 2

چھوڑ یورپ کے لیے رقصِ بدن کے خم و پیچ

Chhod Europe ke liye raqs-e-badan ke kham-o-pech

رُوح کے رقص میں ہے ضربِ کِلیم اللّٰہی!

Rooh ke raqs mein hai zarb-e-Kaleem-ullahi!

Abandon for Europe the body's twisted dance,
For in the soul's dance is Kaleem-ullahi's divine strike!

صِلہ اُس رقص کا ہے تشنگیِ کام و دہن

Sila us raqs ka hai tashnagi-e-kam-o-dahan

صِلہ اِس رقص کا درویشی و شاہنشاہی!

Sila is raqs ka darweshi-o-shahanshahi!

The reward of that dance is unquenchable worldly desire,
The reward of this dance is spiritual simplicity and kingship!

Context

This Urdu couplet contrasts the superficiality of physical 'body dance,' associated with Western culture and leading to unfulfilled desires, with the profound spiritual 'dance of the soul.' The latter is likened to the divine 'strike of Moses' (Zarb-e Kaleemullahi), symbolizing transformative spiritual power. It promises the paradoxical reward of 'mendicancy and kingship,' a Sufi concept where true spiritual humility grants ultimate sovereignty, reflecting a common theme in philosophical Urdu poetry, especially Iqbal's, which prioritizes spiritual elevation over material pursuits.
