حال بد میں مرے بتنگ آ کر

Haal bad mein mere ba-tang aa kar

آپ کو سب میں نیک نام کیا

Aap ko sab mein nek naam kiya

Having grown tired of my sorry plight,
You gained renown among all.

ہو گیا دل مرا تبرک جب

Ho gaya dil mera tabarruk jab

درد نے قطعۂ پیام کیا

Dard ne qit'a-e payaam kiya

When my heart became hallowed,
Pain conveyed its message.

Context

This Urdu couplet, steeped in the ghazal tradition, explores the profound impact of unrequited love and suffering. It portrays the beloved as achieving renown, perhaps through the very distress they inflict, while the lover's heart, refined by enduring anguish, transforms into a sacred relic. Ultimately, the pain itself becomes so overwhelming that it eclipses all other forms of communication, serving as the sole, poignant message.

love & longing (ishq, judāī) · grief (gham)
