Muhammad Iqbal ادبیات Ishq ab pairavi-e-aql-e-khudadad kare ●sher 1 of 2

عشق اب پیرویِ عقلِ خدا داد کرے

Ishq ab pairavi-e-aql-e-khudadad kare

آبُرو کوچۂ جاناں میں نہ برباد کرے

Aabroo koocha-e-jaanaan mein na barbaad kare

May love now follow God-given reason.
May it not ruin honor in the beloved's street.

کہُنہ پیکر میں نئی رُوح کو آباد کرے

Kohna paikar mein nayi rooh ko aabaad kare

یا کُہن رُوح کو تقلید سے آزاد کرے

Ya kohan rooh ko taqleed se aazaad kare

May it settle a new soul in an old form.
Or may it free the old soul from imitation.

Context

This Urdu quatrain explores the perennial poetic theme of love's (ishq) relationship with reason (aql) and tradition. It suggests that love should be guided by divine intellect, preserve dignity, and either infuse new life into old forms or liberate the spirit from blind imitation. This reflects a broader cultural discourse in Urdu literature about balancing spiritual passion with rational thought, and fostering renewal over stagnant adherence to the past.
