Muhammad Iqbal قَبر Marqad ka shabistaan bhi usay raas na aaya ●sher 1 of 2

مرقد کا شبستاں بھی اُسے راس نہ آیا

Marqad ka shabistaan bhi usay raas na aaya

آرام قلندر کو تہِ خاک نہیں ہے

Aaraam qalandar ko teh-e-khaak nahin hai

Even the grave's bedchamber did not suit him.
The Qalandar finds no rest beneath the dust.

خاموشیِ افلاک تو ہے قبر میں لیکن

Khamoshi-e-aflaak toh hai qabr mein lekin

بے قیدی و پہنائیِ افلاک نہیں ہے

Be-qaidi o pehnai-e-aflaak nahin hai

The silence of the heavens is in the grave, but
The freedom and vastness of the heavens are not there.

Context

These verses evoke a profound Sufi and mystical theme common in Urdu poetry, portraying the restless spirit of a 'Qalandar' – a wandering dervish unburdened by worldly ties. It suggests that even the confines of the tomb cannot contain such a soul, whose yearning for infinite spiritual freedom and the vastness of the heavens transcends physical death. The poem beautifully contrasts the grave's silence with the desired boundlessness, emphasizing the eternal quest for liberation.
