مند گئیں کھولتے ہی کھولتے آنکھیں غالبؔ

Mund ga.in kholte hi kholte aankhen Ghalib

یار لائے مری بالیں پہ اسے پر کس وقت

Yaar laaye meri baalin pe usay par kis waqt

Ghalib, my eyes closed just as they were opening.
My friends brought her to my bedside, but at what time?

Context

This couplet by Ghalib exemplifies the tragic irony often found in classical Urdu ghazal, where the lover's fate intervenes at the most poignant moment. It explores themes of longing, missed opportunities, and the cruel twists of destiny, as the beloved arrives at the speaker's bedside only after his eyes have closed, implying death or unconsciousness. The use of "بالیں" (bedside) intensifies the pathos, highlighting the profound sorrow of a connection tragically delayed.

love & longing (ishq, judāī) · grief (gham) · the world's unfairness (shikwa)
