Muhammad Iqbal فوّارہ Yah aab-joo ki ravani, yah ham-kanari-e khaak ●sher 1 of 2

یہ آبجوُ کی روانی، یہ ہمکناریِ خاک

Yah aab-joo ki ravani, yah ham-kanari-e khaak

مری نگاہ میں ناخُوب ہے یہ نظّارہ

Meri nigah mein na-khoob hai yah nazzaara

This flowing of the stream, this embracing of the earth
To my gaze, this scene is unpleasing

اُدھر نہ دیکھ، اِدھر دیکھ اے جوانِ عزیز

Udhar na dekh, idhar dekh ai jawan-e aziz

بلند زورِ درُوں سے ہُوا ہے فوّارہ

Buland zor-e daroon se hua hai fawwaara

Look not there, look here, O dear youth
A fountain has sprung up from inner strength

Context

This Urdu quatrain encourages a reorientation from external, seemingly natural beauty to an internal source of power. The speaker rejects the gentle flow of a stream and its union with the earth as 'not beautiful,' instead urging 'dear youth' to focus on the 'fountain' that erupts from 'inner strength.' This can be interpreted as a call for self-reliance and dynamic, self-generated expression over passive acceptance of the natural order, reflecting a didactic tone common in Urdu poetry that seeks to inspire a more assertive and introspective approach to life.
